Shenzhen Factory Ships Harmless Retiree Kits to Cebu
A Longgang manufacturer reads one London article and moves 41,000 units of looking innocent in three days
SHENZHEN – Zhou Wenbin’s factory in Longgang district has, over the past nine years, manufactured phone cases, LED dog collars, folding stools and, during one confusing quarter in 2021, 80,000 inflatable flamingos for a client who has never been heard from again. Last Tuesday he made a decision that has turned out to be the best of his career.
He started manufacturing the appearance of a harmless British grandfather.
“I read in English newspaper that British retirees in Cebu now carry sandwich box and talk loudly about cricket so nobody suspects them,” Zhou said, walking between pallets stacked to the ceiling with beige wool. “I think, this is a product. They are assembling it by hand, one cardigan at a time. Very inefficient. We can do it in a box.”
The Article That Launched a Product Line
The article in question was The London Prat’s report on the Surrey posture, in which a Cebu estate agent described British pensioners arriving at viewings in cardigans, carrying umbrellas in full sunshine and launching into unprompted cricket chat. One retired quantity surveyor told the paper that “nobody looks at a man with a sandwich box and thinks, there goes a criminal mastermind.”
The context is no laughing matter. Philippine justice officials have opened an inquiry into allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, who lived in Cebu until earlier this year, and no charges have been filed. Zhou is careful on this point. “Investigation is for police,” he said. “Cardigan is for me.”
What Is in the Box
The Harmless Gentleman Starter Pack retails for 199 yuan on three cross-border shopping apps. Each box contains:
- One beige cardigan, wool blend, “deliberately too warm for Cebu, because a man who is sweating cannot also be plotting.”

Sales Figures That Alarm Everyone
The factory sold 41,000 units in its first three days, and Zhou’s marketing department now claims the pack is “the most purchased cardigan in Southeast Asia not bought by an actual grandfather.” Roughly a third of buyers were British pensioners. Another third were Cebu estate agents, who hand them out at the door. The final third were Shenzhen office workers who simply liked the radio.
Product reviews are glowing. “Five stars,” wrote one buyer in Lapu-Lapu City. “My neighbours are still suspicious of me, but now they think I am a librarian.” Another wrote: “Cardigan is very warm. I have not committed any crimes. I have also not stopped sweating since Tuesday.”

Cebu Brokers Are Not Sure It Helps
Local agents report that the kits have produced an unexpected side effect. “Every pensioner at the open house is now wearing the same cardigan,” said one Mactan broker. “Before, I could tell them apart. Now it is like selling a flat to a choir.”
Manila News, at its report from a quiet Cebu showroom, found brokers already struggling with a mood problem rather than a numbers problem, and the numbers continue to look fine. Colliers named the Visayas and Mindanao a property hotspot in July, which Zhou has printed in large type on the side of the box as a reassurance.
A Shipment Is Held at Customs
On Saturday a container of 4,000 starter packs was held at the Port of Cebu after an X-ray scan revealed 4,000 identical sandwich boxes, 4,000 identical radios and 4,000 laminated cheese and pickle sandwiches stacked in perfect rows.
“This is the most innocent thing I have ever seen on a scanner,” the customs officer told reporters. “That is exactly what makes me nervous.”
The container was released on Sunday after inspection. One radio was found to be playing the loop slightly faster than the others. It has been sent back to Shenzhen for re-education.
