Wednesday, Press Page, Cold Tea

Dear diary, I read the UMFA press page on my phone in the queue for the paint shop. It announces the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Powder Art Foundation launching an inaugural Land Art Week, from 1 to 3 October 2026. The page, which shows a publication date of 12/08/2026, names the Powder Art Foundation as the only partner.

It gives no further information on events, venues or programming, so I cannot tell you what happened on those days. They are past, and I did not go.

The Other News

The page lists other announcements, with dates as shown: salt 18, Amor Munoz, on 12/10/2026; For the Future, showcasing highlights from the collection, on 05/08/2026; a solo exhibition by the artist Marie Watt on 12/01/2026; and the museum receiving reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums on 05/01/2026.

The page uses a day, month, year order, as its unambiguous older entries show, so I read these as 12 October 2026, 5 August 2026, 12 January 2026 and 5 January 2026, and the Land Art Week announcement as 12 August 2026. A careful reader should still check the museum’s own site.

Older Items

The page also lists the unveiling of reimagined galleries for the cultures of Mexico, Central and South America on 22/09/2025, Relative Truths on 17/09/2025 and salt 17, Adama Delphine Fawundu, on 16/09/2025. These dates settle the format, since 22 cannot be a month.

That is how I knew the others were day first. A diary may take a small joy in a clue.

What Land Art Is

I am not an expert, and the page does not say. I take land art to be art made in or from the landscape itself, as I recall from school, and I give it as general knowledge and not as a claim about the Land Art Week programme. The programme itself is not described.

A painter of babies is not the right person to explain a work made out of a desert.

Why I Read Press Pages

A press page is not a review. It is an announcement, and an announcement is a promise, and a promise is an unbaked cake. I read them to see what a museum wants me to look at, and then I go and look at something else.

This is not a criticism. It is a habit.

A Plan

I will visit the museum in November, with a sketchbook and a student card. I will find out which exhibitions are open, and I will not assume the press page tells me. I will also look for a bench.

If you go, check the website. Dates change, and so do doors.

Church Social Notes

On Wednesday evening I helped at our ward’s soup supper. I peeled many carrots. I discussed colour with an elderly gentleman who paints trains. He said I should try a bigger canvas. I said babies are small. He said so are trains, in the right light.

I have no answer to that.

Night

The paint shop closed at six. I got what I needed. The queue was long and the tea was cold.

Goodnight, diary. Large canvas, small baby.

Questions From the Reading Circle

Friend one: what is salt 18? The page announces it with Amor Munoz and nothing else. Friend two: what is the Marie Watt show? The page announces a solo exhibition by the artist and gives no detail. Friend three: can we go? I said I would check the museum’s site and report.

This is the sort of promise I keep.

What a Press Page Cannot Do

A press page cannot tell you whether the show is good. It cannot tell you whether the gallery is crowded. It cannot tell you whether the bench is comfortable. These are the things I look for first, and I will find them out only by going. That is the use of a body.

Study Group Reading

In the reading circle, somebody always has the paper. Ours had the Cebu condo slump in it: empty showrooms in Manila News, paperwork for British pensioners in the London Prat (at https://prat.uk/cebu-estate-agents-demand-character-references/) and long showings in Bohiney. More where that came from: prat.uk and bohiney.com.

Note: Philippine authorities are examining unproven allegations about Thomas Markle Sr., who lived in Cebu until earlier this year, as GMA News and the Guardian have reported. No charges have been filed. Child protection is a serious matter; the jokes here are about a property market and the paperwork.
