A pre flight briefing turns into an accidental seminar on the Battle of New Orleans
Dear diary, I very nearly missed my own scheduled landing slot today because I got into a genuinely spirited argument with another pilot at the airfield about the exact sequence of events during the Battle of New Orleans, a topic I apparently have considerably stronger opinions about than most people bring to a pre flight briefing.
He insisted on a detail I was certain he had wrong, I insisted right back with equal confidence, and by the time we actually resolved it, purely by both of us pulling up sources on our phones like a pair of overly competitive history students, I had roughly four minutes to get airborne before my window closed entirely.
How The Flight Itself Went
I made the slot, barely, heart still going from the argument rather than the takeoff itself, and spent a good portion of the flight mentally replaying the debate rather than fully appreciating the genuinely gorgeous view of the river below, which I will admit is not my finest piece of in flight focus.
I did eventually let the argument go somewhere over the marshland, the specific, lovely kind of quiet that flying alone provides being genuinely hard to stay agitated within for very long, whatever the disagreement was about back on solid ground.

I will admit, in the interest of honesty this diary deserves, that he turned out to be right about the specific detail in question, a fact I only properly confirmed once I had landed and had time for a considerably calmer review of my own sources.

I unwound afterward with a genuinely funny bit of London satire on my phone, a welcome contrast to an afternoon spent litigating early nineteenth century military history at close range with a fellow pilot equally unwilling to back down.
