Using This Calendar

Londonist has published a calendar of when Christmas starts in London in 2026, and this guide reorders its dates so a visitor can plan a trip around them. Dates are as published and may change, so check the organiser before travelling.

Visit London adds some tours in {a(VL,’its November listings’)}, which I include at the end.

Lights Switch-Ons

Carnaby Christmas lights switch on 4 November 2026, Regent Street on 5 November and Covent Garden on 12 November, according to Londonist. Those three give a neat route: Carnaby and Regent Street are a short walk apart in the West End.

The page gives dates rather than times for the switch-ons, so check the organisers’ pages for the hour.

Markets and Fairs

On 2 November the Spirit of Christmas Fair opens at Olympia and Southbank Centre’s Winter Market begins. Chelsea Winter Village, including its Christmas market, starts on 25 November, and the Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre on 4 December.

If you want to avoid crowds, the early-November openings are the quietest.

Ice Rinks

Skate Leicester Square opens on 31 October, Glide at Battersea Power Station on 6 November, Skate at Somerset House on 11 November, the Queen’s House ice rink in Greenwich on 18 November and the Hampton Court Palace ice rink on 19 November.

Rinks usually require a booked session, so check each before you go.

Winter Wonderland

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland opens on 19 November, the date given by Londonist, and the official site gives 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. There is a separate guide on tickets and free entry elsewhere in this series.

It makes a good last stop on a festive trip.

Lights Tours

Visit London lists a Christmas lights bus tour running from 3 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, around 90 minutes, from 25 pounds, and a walking tour from 14 November, daily at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, 90 minutes, from 20 pounds.

These are third-party tours and prices may change.

A Sample Route

Early November: Southbank Winter Market or Olympia. Mid November: the West End lights, then Covent Garden on the 12th. Late November: Hyde Park, then Chelsea Winter Village from the 25th. December: Hampton Court, where the festive fayre starts on the 4th.

That is a month of choices, and it avoids doubling back across the city.

Practical Tips

Book rinks and tours ahead, wear layers and expect crowds at weekends. Public transport is busiest around switch-on evenings, so check TfL before you travel.

Check the official pages for the latest dates.

Questions Visitors Ask

Which lights come first? Carnaby on 4 November, according to Londonist. Which is last of the three listed? Covent Garden on 12 November. Which rink opens first? Skate Leicester Square on 31 October.

Where do I find times? The Londonist page gives dates, not times. Organisers’ own pages are the place to look, and I would check them a few days beforehand.

Is Winter Wonderland included? Yes. It opens on 19 November, and a separate guide in this series covers tickets and hours.

Planning Around Crowds

Switch-on evenings draw crowds and the surrounding streets can be busy. A visitor who wants a calm view of the lights can go on a weekday afternoon after the switch-on, when the lights are on but the crowd is thinner. Markets are quietest on weekday mornings.

Rinks and tours usually fill at weekends, so book ahead where the organiser allows it. Check TfL for station closures if you are travelling after dark.

Budget Notes

Many of the pleasures are free: walking under the lights costs nothing, and browsing a market does not oblige you to buy. Paid items include the rinks, the Winter Wonderland rides and the lights tours, whose listed prices start at 20 and 25 pounds.

A sensible plan mixes one paid highlight with a day of free walking.

If You Only Have One Day

With a single day, pick a theme. For lights, take the West End: Carnaby and Regent Street are close together, and Covent Garden is a short walk beyond. For skating, choose one rink and book a session. For markets, the Southbank is easy to combine with a riverside walk.

Whichever you choose, leave time for food and for a rest. Festive crowds make everything take longer than the map suggests.

Humour as a Mirror

Markets that worry are easy to laugh at, and the Cebu condominium story has drawn plenty of that: empty showrooms in Manila News, paperwork for British pensioners in the London Prat (at https://prat.uk/cebu-estate-agents-demand-character-references/) and long showings in Bohiney. See also prat.uk and bohiney.com.

Note: Philippine authorities are examining unproven allegations about Thomas Markle Sr., who lived in Cebu until earlier this year, as GMA News and the Guardian have reported. No charges have been filed. Child protection is a serious matter; the jokes here are about a property market and the paperwork.

For the lighter side of the news, there is always The Daily Squib.
