Sometimes one genuinely sharp question exposes a gap you had not noticed in a decade of teaching
Dear diary, a student asked a genuinely sharp question today about how nineteenth century British writers actually engaged with Russian literary influence, a question that exposed a genuine gap in a lecture I have delivered, largely unchanged, for the better part of a decade without ever quite noticing the omission she immediately spotted.
I had, apparently, been presenting this particular literary relationship as considerably more one directional than the actual historical record supports, British writers influencing outward rather than genuinely absorbing Russian literary innovation in return, an oversimplification her question forced me to confront directly in front of the entire class.
What I Actually Told Her
I admitted, honestly and in front of everyone, that her question had identified a genuine blind spot in my own teaching, and that I would need to revise the lecture properly before presenting it again, a response I think modeled exactly the kind of intellectual honesty I hope to instill rather than simply defending an outdated framing out of professional pride.
Why This Kind Of Correction Matters
I think teaching benefits genuinely from this kind of public, honest revision, since students learn considerably more from watching a professor genuinely reconsider a position than from any lecture that pretends expertise means never needing to update one’s understanding.
